U.S. equites fell again on Friday, as rising Covid-19 cases added to an already strange day for markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell around 1.68% during the week, 1.5% on Friday which was its worst day since Nov 30. The S&P 500 dropped 2% and has been down three of the past four weeks. The Nasdaq Composite fared better on Friday, dropping less than 0.1% on the day, however during the week it still lost around 3% of its value.

U.S. stocks finished higher on Friday to close out one of the best weeks since February. Investors took in a consumer price index report that showed inflation rose in November by the most since 1982, although just below the feared mark of 7%. Investors are also digesting what is expected to be a more hawkish tone from the Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy committee next week at its meeting. For the week, the Dow was up 4%, the S&P 500 Index gained 3.8% and the Nasdaq rose 3.6%.

Stocks closed the week in red but managed to limit some damage with last-hour buying. The NASDAQ (COMP.IND) indexed declined -2.62% over the week, while the S&P (SP500) and Dow (DJI) were down -1.22% and -0.91% respectively, in the same period, notably this is the second-straight losing week for the S&P and NASDAQ. The Dow Industrials have been down four weeks in a row. Last week, US treasury yields tumbled, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling by 10 basis points to 1.35%.

The world's stock markets plunged alongside oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields on Friday after South Africa raised the alarm over a fast-spreading strain of the coronavirus, sparking concerns that travel restrictions and other curbs will threaten global economic recovery. The World Health Organization called the new Omicron strain a "variant of concern" that could be more transmissible than other strains of the virus.

The Dow Jones average fell more than 900 points, or 2.5%, for its worst day of the year, while the S&P 500 slumped 2.3% and the Nasdaq Composite slid 2.2%.

Stocks finished mixed Friday, as energy shares dragged down the S&P 500 index to a slight loss while strength in tech shares lifted the Nasdaq Composite to a record high. Investors were concerned by COVID-19 related developments in Europe, where Austria announced a full national lockdown due to a spike in cases, and Germany mandated new restrictions for unvaccinated people. The news cut down shares of air carriers and other travel related firms.

Stocks rallied Friday, led by technology and communication services, but the major averages finished lower for the week on escalating inflation fears. The October consumer price index, released Wednesday, showed inflation running hotter than at any time in 30 years. The major averages ended the week with modest losses of less than 1%, but all remain within striking distance of their all-time highs.

The three major U.S. indexes notched record closes on Friday, following a pleasant surprise on Jobs Friday. The S&P 500 rose for its seventh consecutive session, matching a winning streak set on Oct. 21. The large-cap index has risen 3.2% amid the run, and it's now up 16 of the past 18 trading days.

U.S. stock market reached another round of record highs on Friday, as investors were not scared by disappointing quarterly results from Apple and Amazon. Both companies missed revenue estimates for the latest quarter and issued cautious guidance due to persisting supply chain problems. On the economic front, the U.S. economy was reported to have grown at a 2% annualized GDP pace in the third quarter to mark the slowest rate of increase in more than a year.
